What is bentonite cord?

Bentonite cord is becoming an increasingly common material used in construction, due to its ability to expand in the body of concrete, absorbing water. It consists of bentonite clay, which, when in contact with water, has the property of swelling and increasing in volume. Also, easy and quick installation has made it very popular on construction sites. Bentonite cord Gidrostop SANPO L is used for waterproofing and sealing technological joints. Due to the unique properties of the insulating material included in the bentonite clay cord, it works all year round and at any temperature.
Bentonite cord is a special waterproofing profile that participates in the waterproofing system of concrete structures. It is used both in reconstructions and repairs of old structures, and in new construction.
What is bentonite cord used for?
Recently, builders are increasingly turning to the use of bentonite cord. This material simplifies the construction process. The ability of the cord to expand and swell has made it very popular in a short time, because when used correctly, this material easily helps to solve waterproofing. Bentonite cord fills all cracks, seams and voids, forming an impermeable connection from water and moisture, which allows for a long-term sealing of the seams of a concrete structure.
- concreting interruption joints: cold, construction joint
- engineering communications inputs
- holes in concrete after formwork removal
What is the working principle of bentonite cord?
Bentonite cord adheres securely and firmly to the surface of the concrete, filling the seams, joints and the smallest voids in the body of the concrete, forming a reliable protective layer. The principle of operation is that as a result of hydration, the bentonite cord increases in volume, forming a gel-like mass that fills all cracks and voids and reliably seals the seams of the concrete structure. The cord expands 4 times in the body of the concrete.
What types of bentonite are there?
Our production standardly produces SANPOL Hydrostop bentonite cord in various sizes.
Cords of any cross-section and length can be manufactured upon request for large quantities.
The standard length of one bentonite cord is 5 meters.
How to choose the right bentonite cord?
To seal technological joints, the size of the bentonite cord is selected depending on the thickness of the concrete wall or slab and the technological characteristics of the structure.
- for sealing holes - bentonite cord with a round section and a diameter of 22 mm .
- for communications entries – rectangular section 5x20 mm .
- for sealing cold joints - rectangular section 10x20 ; 15x25 ; 20x30 mm .
How to install bentonite cord?
The installation of bentonite cord depends on its type and is carried out using a special mesh, dowels, sealant or glue. Usually it is nailed with steel nails or pressed with a perforated mesh or a profile for fastening the bentonite cord.
- A bentonite cord with a round section d22 is inserted into the hole after the tie screw and covered with a repair compound.
- Bentonite cord 5x20 mm with a rectangular section for communication entries - wraps around the pipe, fixes with sealant or wire and is filled with repair mixture.
- Bentonite cord 10x20; 15x25; 20x30 mm for sealing joints is laid along the joint, fixed with a special mesh , dowels, glue or sealant and poured with the next portion of concrete.
What are the advantages of using it?
- low cost
- easy installation (does not require highly qualified installers and special tools)
- wide range of operating temperatures without loss of properties -30°C to 50°C.
- installation on wet substrates possible
- plasticity
- withstands hydrostatic pressure up to 7 atmospheres.
