What is a spinous membrane?

The spiked membrane is a modern waterproofing material used to protect building structures from moisture, water and mechanical damage. It is made of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and has a characteristic surface with cone-shaped spikes 8 mm high. It is supplied in rolls of 20 meters.

Where is a spiked membrane used?

The spiked membrane is used in various areas of construction:

Foundations – protects against moisture and mechanical damage when backfilling.

Retaining walls and curbs – create an additional drainage layer.

Operated roofs and terraces – prevents water leakage and accumulation.

Road construction – stabilizes the base and improves drainage.

Underground structures – tunnels, parking lots, subways, pipelines.

An alternative to concrete preparation – replaces the preparation layer before pouring concrete.

Types of spongy membranes

Depending on the operating conditions and foundation depth, membranes of different densities are used:

400 g/m² – for foundations up to 2 meters deep.

500 g/m² – for foundations more than 2 meters deep.

Spiked membrane with geotextile – for organizing vertical and horizontal drainage. Geotextile prevents the membrane from becoming clogged with soil particles.

Advantages of the spiky membrane

  • Waterproofing is an effective barrier to moisture and groundwater.
  • Resistance to chemical influences – does not collapse under the influence of acids, alkalis and aggressive environments.
  • Protection from mechanical damage – withstands contact with plant roots, rubble, and construction debris.

  • Preparation – cleaning the foundation surface.
  • Unfolding the canvas - the membrane is mounted along the foundation wall 10-30 cm above the soil backfill level.
  • The connection of the sheets is an overlap of 10-20 cm, the seams are glued with double-sided butyl rubber tape .
  • Fastening – mechanically fixed with dowels or a special mounting strip with a pitch of 30 cm.
  • Drainage - a drainage pipe is laid along the perimeter of the foundation, to which a membrane is connected.
