Road Geotextiles: Appointment and Features of Application

Road Geotextiles: Appointment and Features of Application

In road construction, geosynthetics are used to increase the stability and durability of road structures both during new construction and during reconstruction or major repairs. As a rule, they are used as reinforcing, draining or protective layers. The main functions of these materials are: separation, reinforcement, filtration, drainage, moisture barrier and protection from external influences.

What is geotextile?

Geotextiles are a modern construction material that is widely used in road construction to increase the strength of the pavement and extend its service life. Due to its unique properties, geotextiles significantly improve the bearing capacity of road structures, reduce the risk of subsidence and prevent mixing of base layers.

What kind of geotextile is used in road construction?

Thermally bonded geotextiles are nonwoven fabrics that are obtained by bonding fibers from synthetic raw materials (high-quality polypropylene) that undergo heat treatment with infrared radiation, hot air, or calendering.

Nonwoven geotextiles are made by superimposing filaments (continuous fibers) or fibers 3-5 cm long on each other. Reinforcement can be mechanical, for example, stitching; adhesive, for example, using glues, and cohesive, for example, by thermal bonding. The first two connections are external, the third is internal, due to the formation of new structural bonds, which improves the properties of the material.

Fibertex geotextile , which we recommend for road works, is a non-woven material made of thermally bonded endless fibers of 100% propylene. Propylene is resistant to moisture and chemical compounds, in particular alkalis and acids, and is not subject to rotting, fungi and mold, rodents and insects.

Accordingly, the material made of polypropylene also has these characteristics, and its structure provides high strength and filtering properties of Fibertex and performs the following functions in the design: separation, filtration, drainage, protection, reinforcement. Thanks to the combination of different methods of binding fibers, this geotextile is perfectly homogeneous, strong and durable, which avoids delamination, subsidence and punctures.

Laying technology

Substrate preparation: Removal of vegetation, surface leveling.
Laying geotextile: Unfolding the fabric with an overlap of 20-30 cm.
Backfilling with material: Pouring crushed stone or sand, evenly distributing.
Compaction: Using a vibratory roller or tamping.
Finishing: Installation of tile, asphalt, or other covering.

Benefits of using

  • Increased coating service life.
  • Protection of the base from subsidence and erosion.
  • Improved resistance to loads and weather conditions.

Fibertex geotextiles provide a reliable base for any pavement, increasing the durability and quality of road structures.

Geotextiles are an indispensable material in road construction. Its use allows to significantly improve the quality and durability of the road surface, reduce the costs of repair and maintenance, and also increase traffic safety. Due to the wide range of applications and variety of types, geotextiles are becoming the main element of modern construction and improvement of infrastructure. When choosing the appropriate type of geotextile, one should take into account the characteristics of the terrain, the type of load and the required characteristics of the material.
