The secret of proper care of freshly poured concrete: why geotextiles are better than conventional films

Pouring concrete is only half the battle. The real art is letting it harden properly. Many novice builders believe that after pouring, the process is complete and the concrete should simply «dry.» This is a major mistake that leads to cracks and structural failure. In fact, concrete does not need to dry out, but to hydrate —a chemical process that requires the constant presence of moisture.
The best modern solution for preserving this moisture is to cover fresh concrete with geotextiles.

Why has this material become indispensable on construction sites?
1. The main threat is «plastic shrinkage»
In the first hours after pouring, water from the concrete begins to evaporate actively under the influence of the sun and wind. If the rate of evaporation exceeds the rate of release of cement milk to the surface, the so-called plastic shrinkage occurs. The concrete rapidly shrinks, and a network of microcracks appears on it. Geotextiles create a reliable protective barrier that stops this destructive process.
2. The «thermos» effect and uniform humidification
Unlike conventional polyethylene film, which simply collects condensation in drops (which often leads to stains on concrete and uneven care), non-woven geotextiles work differently:

— Capillary effect: Due to its porous structure, it absorbs water and distributes it evenly over the entire area of the concrete.
— Long-term moisture retention: Wet geotextiles dry several times slower than bare concrete surfaces. This significantly reduces the number of waterings required by construction workers.
— Thermoregulation: The material evens out sharp temperature differences between day and night, protecting concrete from temperature shock.

3. Protection from mechanical damage and precipitation
Fresh concrete is very vulnerable. Heavy summer rain can wash away the top layer of cement, leaving potholes, and hail or the accidental fall of small objects can ruin the smoothness of the surface. Geotextiles with a density of 150–200 g/m² serve as a soft «shock absorber» that absorbs the impact of drops and protects the texture of the concrete.
4. Economical and reusable
Using geotextiles is a smart budget decision. Being a durable synthetic material (polypropylene or polyester), it will not rot from constant moisture. After the concrete curing period (usually 7–14 days) is complete, the textile can be neatly rolled up, dried, and used on subsequent projects or for drainage work.

  
The main mistake of a builder: covering «fresh» concrete with just a film.
Here are the main technological blunders and their consequences:
1. The «greenhouse effect with condensation» (staining and crumbling)
The film does not absorb moisture. When water evaporates from fresh concrete, it hits the film and collects in large drops (condensation).

The result: These drops run off and collect in puddles in low spots or under poorly laid sheeting. In these places, the water concentration becomes excessive, the cement slurry is washed away, and after drying, the concrete there becomes brittle, begins to peel and changes color (unsightly white or dark gray spots appear).

2. Air pockets — quick drying zones
It is almost impossible to spread the film perfectly flat, especially on large areas. Air bubbles and folds always form under it.

Consequence: In places where the film does not adhere tightly to the concrete, a so-called «draft under the film» occurs. The air there heats up, moisture evaporates instantly, and it is in these areas that a network of shrinkage cracks appears on the concrete. The concrete dries in spots: somewhere it is wet, and somewhere it is already dry.

3. Lack of additional hydration
Many people believe that since the film is airtight, there is no need to water the concrete under it. This is a gross violation. For proper hydration of cement, a constant influx of new moisture is required, especially in the first 3–5 days.

Consequence: The inner layers of concrete begin to «pull» moisture from the surface, the film does not provide access for uniform watering (and if you water over the film, it makes no sense at all). As a result, the concrete does not reach its original strength.

4. Thermal burn (overheating)
If you use dark or black film in the summer heat, it starts to work as a solar collector. It attracts the sun’s rays, and the temperature under it can exceed +50°C.

Consequence: Such critical overheating of fresh concrete causes the water inside it to literally boil or evaporate too quickly. The chemical reaction of strength development is disrupted, and the structure becomes brittle.


How to properly use geotextiles in practice?

Time: The material should be laid immediately after the concrete has set enough so that the textile will not leave deep marks on it (usually a few hours after the final leveling).
Abundant watering: After laying, the geotextile is thoroughly watered until completely saturated.
Fixation: The edges of the material must be pressed down with boards or bricks so that the wind does not pick up the canvas and expose the concrete.

Covering concrete with geotextiles is not an additional expense, but an investment in the durability of the structure. To cover «fresh» concrete, it is necessary to use exclusively needle-punched geotextiles, which retain water within their structure and provide ideal conditions for hydration of the concrete. Thermally bonded material is categorically not suitable for this purpose.
